How to Decorate a Witch Frog Cookie for Halloween

This cute witch frog cookie is ready to hop into Halloween! Featuring a smiling frog topped with an oversized witch hat, this playful design is a fun alternative to the usual ghosts, pumpkins, and other spooky Halloween cookies. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to decorate the witch frog with royal icing, using the free projector template included with our cookie cutter to help guide the placement of each detail.

If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.

Step-By-Step Cookie Decorating Guide

Decorating cookies always starts with a good royal icing recipe. This is my easy royal icing recipe for decorating sugar cookies that I always use.

For the colors used for these witch frog cookies, you will need the following suggested colors:

• White icing (I used Americolor Bright White.)
• Black icing (I used Americolor Super Black.)
• Green icing (I mixed equal parts Americolor Egg Yellow with Mint Green.)
• Light Yellow icing (I mixed a touch of Americolor Egg Yellow with Mint Green. Slightly more egg yellow than mint green.)
• Purple icing (I used Americolor Regal Purple.)

Step 1

Begin by filling in the black hat section, the yellow belly section, and every other toe with green icing. Let this icing set up for a bit (about 30 minutes).

Then add the remaining green toes, as shown. Add the purple band on the hat.

Step 2

Next, fill in the thigh sections. Let this icing set up for a bit (about 30 minutes).

Then fill in the head and arms section around the belly, as shown.

Step 3

Finally, add the facial details like the black eyes (with a white dot accent), a line for the mouth, the nostril accent, and outline the black witch hat.
