Learn how to decorate a fun Father’s Day cookie set featuring a coffee mug filled with tools and stenciled with the phrase “Best Dad Ever.”

Celebrate Dad with a cookie design that’s both heartfelt and fun to decorate! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a two-piece cookie set featuring a coffee mug filled with classic tools—perfect for Father’s Day. To add a personal touch, we’ll use a stencil to easily apply the phrase “Best Dad Ever” right on the mug. This set is a thoughtful gift option for dads who love their morning coffee as much as their toolkits. Template for the Tools Mug Cookie Set
To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template of all of this tools mug design.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Cookie Decorating Process
First, to decorate amazing cookies you need a fullproof Royal Icing recipe. For this recipe, you only need a few ingredients to make this icing and food coloring of your choice to create beautifully decorated cookies for any celebration or holiday.
Once your icing is made, be sure to view our blog post about royal icing consistencies as a guide to help prepare this icing for cookie decorating.
For these Father's Day cookies, I used the following icing colors below:
- Dark Blue icing (I mixed Americolor Royal Blue and a touch of Americolor Super Black.)
- Light Blue icing ( I mixed a sample of the dark blue icing with fresh white icing.)
- Gray icing (I used Americolor Stone.)
- Tan icing (I mixed Americolor Ivory with a touch of the dark blue icing above.)
- Black(I used Americolor Super Black.)
- White icing (I used Americolor Bright White.)
Step 1
For the tools top cookie, begin by filling a thin layer of white icing where the empty space and the wrench will be. Let this icing set.
Then, add the blue handles of the hammer and the screwdriver. For the screwdriver, fill the section with dark blue icing then quickly add the light blue stripes, as shown.

Step 2
Next, add the gray details like the top hammer area, and the lower sections of the wrench and screwdriver. Let this icing set.
Add the head of wrench and the end of the hammer detail.

Step 3
For the mug cookie, begin by filling in the main mug area. After the icing sets, fill in the handle section, as shown.

Step 4
For the lettering, I made sure the base layer of icing dried completely.
In the shop is a new Best Dad Ever cookie stencil. Using a Stencil Genie frame to stablize the stencil, swipe thick blue royal icing over it to apply it to the cookie. The video below better illustrates how I did this.

Tools Mug Cookie Video Tutorial
The steps above are summarized in this time-lapsed video I put together below.
Below is the completed set of the tools mug cookies.

To package this set, I first sealed each cookie in one of our clear heat-sealable cello bags to keep them fresh and protected. (I use the 5"x8" size.)

For the final presentation, I placed the cookies inside a clear cookie box with a piece of blue cardstock underneath to make the design pop. It’s a simple way to elevate your gift and give it a polished, professional look—perfect for Father’s Day gifting!

I hope this tutorial inspired you to try decorating your own “Best Dad Ever” Tools Mug cookie set! It’s a thoughtful and creative way to celebrate Father’s Day with something handmade and sweet. Whether you’re gifting it to a customer, a friend, or your own dad, this cookie set is sure to make him feel appreciated. You can find the cookie cutter set, stencil, and packaging supplies used in this tutorial in my shop. Be sure to check it out for more Father’s Day cookie cutters!
