The inner kid in me can't help but be giddy when a childhood cartoon gets remade into a live-action film. (X-Men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe and How the Grinch Stole Christmas were some of my major giddy-enducers, just to name a few.) However, when a childhood cartoon gets remade into an edible treat, I can barely contain myself.

I have teamed up with the always creative, Hani of Haniela's, to bring a childhood cartoon favorite of mine into cookie form. I present to you our Transformers collaboration!

Below I will show you how to make Optimus Prime cookie cupcakes, but be sure to swing by Hani's Youtube channel to check out her awesome Bumblebee cookie tutorial.

Preparing the Cookie

Before we get started here's a link to my go-to sugar cookie recipe.

The shape of Optimus Prime's head was based on this cat cutter from a Wilton Halloween set.

I sketched out a design of Optimus that best utilized the shape of the cat cutter and made it available for all of you.

You can download the printable Optimus Prime design template HERE.

From the printout design, I made a plastic template (optional) to help trace the design onto the cookie with a food marker. Be sure to mark the out edge of the design, as well as the eye section.

Once the design is on the cookie, it's time to decorate.

Decorating Optimus Prime Cookies

  1. 1
  2. With very thin gray flood icing, spread a thin layer over the entire middle eye section. Set aside to dry completely.

  2. Once the gray icing is dry, etch the shape of eye section with a needle tool or toothpick. This will help be your icing guide in the next steps.

  2. With royal blue icing, outline the outer edges of the head (as shown below) with piping icing. Then fill the middle with royal blue flood icing. Leave to dry and crust over.

  2. With medium-consistency gray icing, add the mouth and forehead details. With royal blue icing, pipe and fill the brow band detail. Set aside to dry.

  2. Once the details in the previous step had time to crust over, outline and fill the side sections of the head. Also, outline around the forehead detail with the same blue icing.

  2. With medium-consistency light blue icing, fill in the eye sections. Use a needle tool to help shape the eyes.

  2. Lastly, (this is an optional step) I used food pens to add the fine line details. Totally not necessary, but it does add nice dimension.

Optimus Prime Cookie Cupcakes

Feel like taking this Transformers treat to the next level? You can easily transform these Optimus Prime cookies into cupcakes. (See what I did there?) Here's how.

You will need pre-baked cupcakes, cocktail skewers, red buttercream, and Optimus Prime chest cupcake wrappers that I designed.

You can download the printable Optimus Prime cupcake wrappers HERE. (This is a large file that may take a moment to load.)

Optimus Prime Cupcake Wrappers

Constructing these wrappers is simple. Print out the PDF file on cardstock, cut out the wrapper designs with scissors, then tape the ends together in the back with clear tape.

To help the cookies stand upright on the cupcake, I found flat bamboo skewers (pictured above) at World Market. I loved the flat surface of these picks because you can easily add a touch of royal icing and it attaches flat behind the cookie.

Once the icing on the skewers had time to dry, top the cupcakes with a swirl of red buttercream frosting and place the Optimus Prime cookie down through the middle.
