As some kids dreaded the thought of going back to school, I used to relish it. It wasn't because I couldn't wait to see my friends again after a summer off, or was eager to learn new stuff. It was mostly because I loved the thought of getting new school supplies.

Super dorky, I know.

Getting a new shopping list from my teacher then hitting the stores with my mom felt like an exhilarating scavenger hunt. As I hunted down and checked each class item off my list, not only did it give me cheap thrills, I also had to ask myself some very important questions along the way:

“Will this year be a black or blue pen kind of year?”, “Should I go for the new green colored highlighter? Or should I play it safe with the classic yellow?”, or “Is this the year I experiment with mechanical pencils?”

I had to live with the choices to these important questions for a whole a year, so I took each decision very seriously.

Speaking of pencils, the old school wooden ones have never let me down. Which is why I had to include one in this back-to-school cookie set. These decorated pencil cookies are pretty easy to decorate and are sure to generate smiles on anyone receiving this gift set.

Back-to-School Cookie Cutters

Added to the shop are three new back-to-school themed cookie cutters: a wooden pencil, a pair of scissors, and a glue bottle.

School supply cookie cutters

Each cookie cutter is made to fit perfectly in my favorite 7″ x 4.5″ BRP Box when grouped together as a 3-piece gift set. However, each piece can be purchased individually if you prefer one over the others.

Template for the Pencil Cookies

To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template available for all the back-to-school supply designs shown.

You can download the back-to-school supply cookie templates HERE.

If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.

The Decorating Process

For the colors used for these pencil cookies, you will need the following suggested colors:

  • Yellow royal icing. (I used Americolor Egg Yellow.)
  • Pink icing (I mixed Americolor Coral Red with a touch of Americolor Ivory.)
  • Gray icing. (I used Americolor Stone, but a touch of black would work too.)
  • White icing (I used Americolor Bright White.)
  • Black icing (I used Americolor Super Black.)

Step 1

For those without a projector, mark guidelines where the different sections should be, as shown. I made a template with template plastic from the PDF file above and used a food marker to draw the guideline on the cookie.

Step 2

Begin by filling in alternating sections. When adding the eraser section, fill with the pink icing then quickly add a white reflection mark with white icing. Let the icing dry for a bit, then fill the remaining sections.

Let the icing set for 20 minutes.

Step 3

Once the base layer had time to set, add the finishing touches, as shown below.

Video Tutorial

The steps above are demonstrated in the time-lapsed video below.

These pencil cookies are adorable as a stand-alone cookie, but are even cuter in a set.

The pencil has two buddies to accompany it. The scissors and glue bottle are the perfect companions that complete this box set.

Each cookie is sized appropriately to fit inside this 7″ x 4.5″ BRP Box and is sure to be a hit with any teacher or student.
