Decorate a Colorful Crayon Cookie Platter for Back-to-School Season
Back-to-School season is finally upon us. Whether you're eagerly anticipating a return to learning, sending your kids off to school for the very first time, or hosting an end-of-summer bash with your fellow teachers—we've got just the cookie platter to help ease you into a new year of education.
This new crayon cookie platter design is very beginner-friendly. So if you're an experience baker or just casual hobbyist, this tutorial will guide you through every step of the process, ensuring that your crayon cookie platter becomes the star of any school-themed gathering. So let's dive in and get ready to embark on a colorful baking adventure!
Overlapping Crayon Platter Cookie Cutter Set
New to the shop is this overlapping crayon platter cookie cutter set. This set includes 2 cookie cutters: an overlap crayon, and a center circle. You can purchase both cookie cutters together, or as a single piece without the circle cutter.
(This is the same circle cutter used in all my platter sets, like this Snowflake set, Spiral Platter, and Floral Wreath, etc.)
There are two sizes available. When arranged as a platter, as shown in the example picture, the platter measures:
LARGE- 12 inches in diameter.
SMALL- 9 inches in diameter.
For this tutorial, I'll be decorating the LARGE size.
Cookie Templates for the Crayon Cookie Platter Set
To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template available for all the new back-to-school cookie cutter designs, including this crayon platter set.
You can download these cookie templates HERE.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Cookie Decorating Process
For the colors used for these crayon cookies, you will need the following suggested colors:
- Red royal icing (I used Americolor Super Red.)
- Yellow icing (I mixed Americolor Egg Yellow and Americolor Orange.)
- White icing. (I used Americolor Bright White.)
- Black icing (I used Americolor Super Black.)
- Green icing (I mixed Americolor Egg Yellow with Mint Green and a touch of Americolor Electric Green.)
- Teal icing (I mixed equal parts Americolor Teal and Americolor Sky Blue.)
- Purple icing (I used Rainbow Dust Progel Purple.)
Step 1
Begin by outlining and flooding the crayon cookies in the different colors listed available. I needed two of each crayon color to complete the platter.
Also, outline and flood the center circle cookie in black icing.
Step 2
Next, after the base had time to set (about 30 minutes) add the label details like the black oval, the black stripe, and the colored line at the top collar.
I used a pico projector to get this placement uniform on all the crayon pieces.
Step 3
For the final, center message cookie, I let the base layer of icing dry completely.
In the shop is a new back-to-school cookie stencil you can use for the center message. Just swipe thick white royal icing over it to apply it to the cookie. The video below better illustrates how I did this.
Overlapping Crayon Cookie Platter Video Tutorial
The steps above are summarized in this time-lapsed video I put together below.
Here's the final crayon cookie platter all assembled. To create this entire platter required 11 cookies--10 crayon pieces, and 1 center circle cookie.
This is the large, 12" version. For the tray it's on, I like to use the 12" pizza pans from Dollar Tree. They are cheap and sturdy for transporting around.
Working with royal icing was a lot of fun and it's exciting to see the creative designs you can create with just a few colors! This crayon platter was definitely an eye-catching way to celebrate the start of the school year, but if you're in need of more ideas, fear not—we have plenty!
