Decorate a Mama Hen Cookie Set for Mother's Day
We have the cutest cookie-decorating tutorial just in time for Mother's Day! In this post, I'm excited to share with you a cookie set featuring a sweet mama hen alongside her adorable chick. With cookie cutters and stencils available in our shop, you'll learn how to create these charming cookies that are perfect for celebrating the special moms out there. Let's get started!
Mama Chicken Hen Cookie Cutter
For this pair of cookies, I used the Mama Chicken Hen cookie cutter (the LARGE size) and the wheat oval plaque cookie cutter (the REGULAR size) that were just added to our shop.
When assembled, this Mother's Day set would fit nicely in this BRP cookie box (7" x 4 3/8" x 1.25").
Template for the Mama Hen Cookie Set
To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template of all the designs of this year's Mother's Day cookie collection, including this Mama Hen cookie set design.
Click the link below for the downloadable template PDF file.
This file is rather large in data size. Just a warning, it might take a moment before the file opens in your browser.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Cookie Decorating Process
For these Mother's Day cookies, you will need the following suggested colors:
- Tan royal icing (I mixed Americolor Taupe with a touch of Americolor Warm Brown and a touch of Americolor Electric Green.)
- Orange icing (I used Americolor Orange.)
- Brick Red icing (I mixed Americolor Super Red with a touch of Chocolate Brown.)
- Yellow icing (I used Egg Yellow.)
- White icing (I used Americolor Bright White.)
- Black icing (I used Americolor Super Black.)
For the airbrush color I mixed 20 drops of Amerimist Ivory with the tiniest drop of Amerimist Warm Brown.
Step 1
For the hen cookie, begin by fill in the main body with tan icing and the top of the head detail with brick red icing. Let this icing set for about 15 minutes.
Then fill in the head section with white icing and the chick section with yellow icing. (I added a lower base layer to the chick so it will stand out on top of the hen's icing.)
Step 2
Once the base layers had time to set, add the beak of the hen's face and fill in the whole chick's body.
Then add the red beak detail and the chick's beak, as shown.
Step 3
Add the eyes and the body outlines, as shown.
Step 4
For the Mama Hen plaque cookie, I airbrushed ivory gingham using this stripes cookie stencil. For the airbrush color I mixed 20 drops of Amerimist Ivory with the tiniest drop of Amerimist Warm Brown. I also mixed a few drops of water to make the color less concentrated.
Step 5
For the details, I used a projector to pipe "Mama Hen" and the wheat detail on the plaque.
And here's the final cookie.

They both fit nicely in this BRP cookie box (7" x 4 3/8" x 1.25").
