  1. Easter Extravaganza Project: Easter Egg Painting Chicks

    March 10, 2013 by Mike

Easter is fast approaching, which means it’ll be Spring time before we know it. When I was in grade school I always looked forward to this time of year… the budding tulips, the chocolate bunnies, the Spring Break vacations. But my favorite activity, by far, was decorating Easter eggs. There is something fun about coloring an item that is meant to be eaten. (That could explain why I took up decorating cookies.)

So, when I was invited to participate in the Easter Extravaganza Project organized by awesomely talented Haniela, Easter egg decorating was the first thing that came to mind.

I had this concept idea the Easter Bunny may have done the hiding of the eggs, but it was his crew of Easter chicks that did the decorating. I just needed to convey that idea in cookie form. I started with making the chicks.

The chick cookies were made from an upside-down skull cutter and the base of a trophy cutter. (These cutters were from this Betty Crocker set.)

  2. Star Trek Valentine Cookies and Giveaway

I have some exciting news! I’d like to share two things with you that I love dearly— geeky cookies and giveaways. I’ll get to the giveaway in a moment, but let me first show you the cookies I made this week.

These Star Trek themed cookies were inspired by this cake by Notorious Cupcakes. I loved the simple uniform design. Bonus points for being a design from my favorite Star Trek series, The Next Generation. If you’re not familiar with this Star Trek series here’s a picture for reference.

  3. Breaking Bad Cookies

The promos for the upcoming, final season of Breaking Bad have gotten me really excited! If you have never watched this TV show, I think it would be worth your while to check out.

For those Breaking Bad virgins out there, here is the show’s premise: Walter White is a cancer-stricken Chemistry teacher whose personal journey leads him to become a meth kingpin. As the show’s seasons progressed, it has been great watching Walt develop from this seemingly good guy into a darker, killer version of his old self. The storyline is so unpredictable, leaving you guessing what Walt is really capable of.

In anticipation of the final season’s premiere I made Breaking Bad cookies. I made three types of Walt cookies. First, Walt in just a shirt and tighty-whiteys from Season 1 is one of my favorite scenes, I had to include it in this batch. The second cookie is the lab outfit that he and his sidekick, Jesse, wear when “cooking” meth. Lastly, I made a cookie of Walt’s secret identity, Heisenberg.

To go with the Walt cookies, I made a few accessories from the show. I made a few cookies to look like little baggies of Walt’s crystal meth recipe, “Blue Ice.” I used sugar sprinkles to get the crystal-rock look.

I also made the burnt, pink teddy bear featured in Season 2. Each week, that season continued to tease us with images of that teddy bear throughout its run. I tried to replicate this charred bear in cookie form.  I finally got to use my new food-coloring airbrush kit (that I randomly won back in April). I airbrushed the black color onto the bear to get that burnt look.

Lastly, I made the green and white element blocks that you see in the title graphics.

I had a few other show ideas for cookie designs that I really wanted to try but I ran out of cookie dough. Oh well, this batch used so many colors I figured I needed to settle with the designs I had.

Last season’s finale ended with such a bang (Spoiler Alert: literally!) I can’t wait to see how the new season picks up.  Breaking Bad premieres Sunday, July 15th on AMC.

  4. The Academy Awards Oscar Cookies

The Academy Awards were on tonight.  Did you watch?  I love the Oscars, but I have to admit I only saw one of the films nominated for Best Picture. (2011 was a busy year for me.) Anyways, The Help was a great movie and I thought Octavia Spencer deserved her win.  In honor of tonight’s awards show I made Oscar trophy cookies.

I was a little nervous the design of this cookie might look like gold camouflage.  Being an all gold statue, there wouldn’t be a lot of contrasting colors when drawing it out on a cookie.  I opted to do a shaded version of the trophy showcasing lowlights and highlights.  I think if you squint your eyes you can see the bald man proudly holding his sword.  Overall, I think the cookies came out pretty good.

Here’s a summary of tonight’s award results.  Congrats to all the winners!
